The Indian government announced this year’s 5G spectrum auctions during the Union Budget session. There are now more specifics on how soon it might begin. The 5G spectrum auction may take place in India in May of this year, according to reports. The following are the facts.
5G Spectrum Auctions to Start in India
According to an unnamed senior TRAI official, the May deadline will be clarified if the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) submits its recommendations on the auction rules by March. Rumors about the same date have been floating around for some time.
This news follows a recent confirmation by telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw that TRAI would submit its suggestions for the 5G spectrum auctions by March. It is also expected that the DoT will move forward with other processes in a timely manner so that auctions can be held as soon as possible.
“TRAI has demonstrated that they should send it (recommendations) by March,” said Telecom Secretary K Rajaraman (via ET Telecom). In the following month, we will come to an agreement on how to proceed.
When it comes to the auctions for India’s mobile network, the government has taken anywhere between 60 and 120 days to begin bidding. As a result, 5G auctions are expected to follow suit in a similar fashion. We’ll find out the exact date of the auction in the coming days.
Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has stated that private telcos like Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) will begin commercial 5G services between 2022 and 2023. 5G trials are already being conducted by these telecom companies in India. Indians are expected to benefit from 5G, which is expected to be 10 times faster than 4G LTE.
We hope that eventually around, the auctions for 5G spectrum will go off without a hitch, so that netizens who’ve already purchased 5G phones will finally be able to use them. The start of 5G auctions is expected some time in the future. What are your thoughts, let us know in the comment section below?
