Even if the economy is slowing down, high-priced goods continue to be in limited supply. Knowing that AMD is working to prevent this with its Radeon RX 7900 series is encouraging. According to Kyle Bennett, formerly of HardOCP and now a reliable leaker on Twitter, the company is preparing at least 200,000 Radeon RX 7900-series graphics cars for debut in the middle of December.
The release date for AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XT and Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards is slated for Wednesday, December 13; reportedly, “over 200,000” of these cards will be available. According to Kyle, the figure of 200,000 likely incorporates “over” 30,000 reference built-by-AMD cards.
When released, these GPUs will likely rank among the best in the market. Given the list prices and probable volume dispersion, there is over $2 billion in gear ready to be sold. As Kyle Bennett put it, “Verified from several sources.” “During the last three months of the year, AMD Radeon will ship over two hundred thousand 7900 XT and XTX graphics processing units.
On the day of publication, almost 30,000 desk guides were available for purchase.” Some may now be pondering the market significance of 200,000 graphics cards. According to Jon Peddie Research, the market buys about 10 million discrete desktop graphics cards every quarter (although this number dipped to around the 7 million mark in the third quarter), and millions more standalone GPUs move to notebooks.
If the reported opening day sales of 200,000 are accurate, then 200,000 quarterly copies may not seem like a lot. Radeon RX 7900-series graphics cards, on the other hand, are top-of-the-line offerings from AMD that cost more because of it. Like Kyle, they are banking on being snapped up on day one.
Considering the low end of the graphics card market begins at $899 and goes up to $999, it’s safe to say that we’re talking about a $2 billion market. We’ll have to wait and see how AMD’s new cards stack up against Nvidia’s RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 after their releases because the latter have been consistently out of stock and/or selling at higher costs.
