Apple Again Leads Smartphone Shipments in Japan in 2022.

Despite a decline in sales and a weakening market, Apple’s share of the Japanese smartphone market will remain dominant throughout 2022.
The fourth quarter of 2022 was challenging for Apple due to production issues with the iPhone 14 Pro, which also dampened an otherwise prosperous year. Despite the obstacles, Apple has maintained its dominant position in Japan, according to new data.

A report by IDC Japan breaks down smartphone shipments in Japan for the fourth quarter and the entire year of 2022. The data demonstrates that Apple’s iPhone continues to outsell competitors such as Samsung, Sony, and others.

34.3 million smartphones were sold in Japan in 2022, a decline of 8.1% from the previous year. Apple led the market with 16.6 million units sold, or 48.4% share, which is down 3.8% from the record-breaking shipments in 2021.

In Japan, 8.5 million smartphones were shipped in the fourth quarter, a decrease of 16%. Apple sold 51.2% of devices, or 4.4 million units, while Android came in second with 4.1 million units sold.

Both the smartphone market and total shipments of both operating systems fell by roughly 16%.

The report attributes Apple’s continued success to carriers’ promotional campaigns utilising the iPhone. The decrease in iPhone sales for the quarter was attributed to the weaker yen, global inflation, and the discontinuation of iPhone sales at retailers.

In a note, Masafumi Ibe, a market analyst at IDC, cites Chinese smartphone supply chain difficulties as an additional factor. In addition, as 5G becomes a commodity, businesses must find new sales-driving technologies.
