Apple’s App Store beats all records on New Year’s Day

Apple has announced that their App Store had its busiest day on 1 January 2017. Throughout 2016, Apple enjoyed success with record developer earnings and widespread app purchases and downloads.

1 January 2017 was officially the most profitable day for the App Store since its 2008 inception. Apple raked in almost $240 million in purchases on New Year’s Day. This extraordinarily high figure supports the upward trajectory of online purchases.

Super Mario Run became the #1 downloaded app on both Christmas and New Year’s Day. The game is also one of the most downloaded apps globally. Also among the most widely downloaded games were Monster Strike, Fantasy Westward, Clash Royale and Pokemon Go.

Apple’s senior VP of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, stated that “2016 was a record-shattering year for the App Store, generating $20 billion for developers, and 2017 is off to a great start with 1 January being the single biggest day ever on the App Store.

With 2017 off to a great start, Apple will need to build on this momentum through its developers. The app market has become more discerning and more competitive with Google also making significant strides. We hope to see more innovation with the App Store and maybe a reduction in prices.
