Atari bought the intellectual property rights to more than 100 PC and computer games from the 1980s and 1990s. These games include multiple titles from the Bubsy platforming series, the Hardball baseball series, and the Demolition Racer vehicle combat series.
With this purchase, Atari wants to make it easier for people to get their hands on current games, work with other companies to make merchandise, and, most importantly, make new games based on these IPs. Atari CEO Wade Rosen says that some old games will also be made available on newer platforms.
As part of the deal, Atari also bought the trademark for Accolade, the company that made and sold the Bubsy and Hardball game lines.
The purchase comes a month after Atari bought a dozen other classic IPs, including the shooter’s Berzerk and Frenzy, for a total of $15 million.
Last year, with Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, the company showed that it could give old games new life.
IGN’s review of Atari 50 said that the 103-game collection is “a completely new and very fun way to explore Atari’s arcade machines, consoles, handhelds, and PCs from the past three decades.”
