Every week, during the tracking period from Friday through Thursday, the Billboard 200 ranks the most commercially successful albums. However, while record sales used to be the sole determinant of the charts, the shifting technological landscape has forced Billboard to adapt its approach in the twenty-first century.
One of the most significant shifts occurred in 2014 when Billboard switched from pure sales to a mix of variables that included online streams and single-track sales in addition to traditional album sales. Every album sale is significant, as it has always been. The sale of ten individual tracks, on the other hand, counts as one album unit.
A single album unit requires 3,750 ad-supported streams or 1,250 premium subscription streams. Billboard expanded its criteria once more in 2020, this time to include music video streaming on outlets such as YouTube.
The Beatles, unsurprisingly, hold the record for the most number-one albums, with 19; they also have the most number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, with 20.
When you count Paul McCartney’s solo albums plus his albums with the band Wings, he has a total of 27. Jay-Z comes in second with 14 number-one albums, making him the most successful solo artist of all time.
Here are the top albums on Billboard in 2022.
