Chetan Sharma, the chairman of the selection committee for the BCCI, tendered his resignation early on the 17th of February, 2023. It has been reported that BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has acknowledged the resignation and accepted it. In the wake of a controversial sting operation that was carried out by Zee News and which showed Mr. Sharma revealing classified selection matters, he has resigned from his position.

“Yes, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has received Chetan’s resignation, and it has been accepted,” said Jay Shah. “Chetan has tendered his resignation.” After the undercover operation, his position had become impossible to maintain. According to a senior BCCI source who spoke to PTI on Friday under the condition of anonymity, “He resigned voluntarily and was not asked to resign.”

Chetan Sharma, along with the other members of the selection committee, was present in Kolkata for the Ranji Trophy final game, which was played between Bengal and Saurashtra. They were there to choose the team that would compete in the Irani Cup.

It has been learned that Chetan’s remarks were not well received by the senior leadership of the BCCI, and the members of the current national squad have also lost their trust in him as a result.

“Not only the captains Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, but also the coach Rahul Dravid, have completely lost faith in him. Because he had completely lost their respect, it was impossible for him to participate in the selection committee meetings alongside them at the same table. Another BCCI source stated that he had to pay the consequences for speaking his mind.

Mr. Sharma was seen allegedly disclosing his private conversations with the head coach Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli, along with levelling serious allegations against some of the team’s senior players. He asserted that there was a battle of egos going on between the previous captain, Virat Kohli, and the previous president of the BCCI, Sourav Ganguly.

He also made accusations against certain players, saying that a lot of them “take injections” to speed up their return to competitive cricket despite being 80–85% fit. He said this despite the fact that they were fit enough to play.

When asked about the former captain Virat Kohli, he stated that Kohli had begun to think of himself as “bigger than the Board” and had attempted to “hit back” at the previous president of the BCCI because Kohli believed that Ganguly had removed him from his position as captain of the ODI team.

Due to the fact that national selectors are bound by contract and are not permitted to speak to the media, the BCCI was investigating the situation.
