Today, Gabby Barrett would redo “I Hope” in a different way.
When Barrett and her co-writers first came up with the concept for “I Hope,” the song was more upbeat. “I Hope” was originally written from the perspective of a woman who was distraught following a breakup. She would, however, wish her ex-lover all the best long after the relationship had ended. Barrett disagreed with that viewpoint.
“I’m one of eight children, so I’ve seen a lot of poor relationships and how women and individuals feel when things are done wrong to them,” she says. “So we basically made [“I Hope”] into a song that conveyed a person’s point of view, what they would want to say to someone when a poor relationship came to an end,” Barrett explained.
Barrett, who is now happily married to singer Cade Foehner, would not compose the record in the same way if he were doing it now. The singer stated that if she released the song now, she would significantly alter it due to her newfound happiness.
Barrett told People, “I’d absolutely write ‘I Hope’ differently.”
Barrett contemplated lightening the mood when asked what she would change about her song.
“And then I hope you’re… fortunate?” she stated “I’m not sure — something less enraged!”
Gabby’s marital status is that she is married to rock singer Cade Foehner. They met on the set of American Idol and began dating each other. The couple married in October 2019 and welcomed their first child, a daughter named Baylah May Foehner, on January 18.
