Upon the 2018 release of the original HomePod, it was revealed that the speaker can leave white rings on certain wooden surfaces. Now, renowned YouTuber Marques Brownlee has confirmed that the issue remains, albeit to a lesser amount, with the updated HomePod.
In a side-by-side comparison, he demonstrated that the white second-generation HomePod left a white ring on the wooden surface it was put on, however the stain was fainter and took longer to emerge than the one left by the first-generation HomePod.
Apple recognised in a 2018 support document that speakers with vibration-damping silicone bases can leave light stains on certain hardwood surfaces due to the diffusion of oils between the silicone base and the table surface:
Apple has not yet updated the support documentation to include the HomePod second generation. The issue has no bearing on the HomePod mini.
