Google Bard is a new chatbot solution introduced in response to artificial intelligence (AI) competitors such as ChatGPT. It uses a combination of natural language processing and machine learning to offer realistic and helpful responses to any questions you may ask it. Smaller businesses who want to offer natural language help to their consumers without employing huge support teams may find these tools particularly beneficial, as well as Google’s own search tools.

What is Google Bard?

Google Bard is the company’s response to ChatGPT. It’s an AI chatbot with many of the same features, but is aimed to eventually supplement Google’s own search tools (similar to how Bing is already utilising ChatGPT) and provide automated help and human-like contact for businesses.

Utilizing LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) technology, it has been under development for several years. It is based on Google’s Transformer neural network architecture, which also served as the foundation for other AI generating tools, such as ChatGPT’s GPT-3 language model.

What question did Google Bard get wrong?

Google Bard was unveiled for the first time on February 6, 2023, and in its preview demonstration, it made an error when answering a question about the James Webb Space Telescope’s recent discoveries. It claimed to have been the first to snap a photograph of an exoplanet outside of our solar system, however this feat was accomplished decades earlier. The fact that Google Bard displayed this incorrect information with such assurance prompted harsh criticism of the tool and similarities to ChatGPT’s flaws. In reaction, Google’s stock price dropped several points.

How do I use Google Bard?

At the time of writing, Google Bard is only available to a limited number of beta testers. However, Google is likely to roll out Google Bard to a larger audience in the next weeks and months. Early in 2022, CEO Sundar Pichai intensified the development of Google Bard in response to indicators of ChatGPT’s success. With the ongoing excellent news coverage ChatGPT received in 2023, this trend is likely to have continued apace.

If you aren’t part of the elite set of Bard beta testers for now, you’ll just have to play the waiting game until we hear more from Google.

Google Bard vs. ChatGPT

Google Bard and ChatGPT both employ natural language models and machine learning to generate their chatbots, but each provides a unique set of capabilities. At the time of writing, ChatGPT’s responses are fully dependent on data collected mostly up until 2021, but Google Bard has the potential to use current information. ChatGPT has a significant focus on conversational questions and answers, but it is currently employed in Bing’s search results, too, to answer more conversational searches. Google Bard will be utilised in the same manner, but solely to augment Google.

Both chatbots have slightly distinct language models. Google Bard employs LaMBDA, while ChatGPT is built on GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) (Generative Pre-trained Transformer). ChatGPT includes a plagiarism checker, although Google Bard, as far as we are aware, does not.

ChatGPT is also widely accessible for testing, whereas Google Bard is restricted to beta testers.

When Will Google Bard Be Available?

Google Bard is already accessible to a select group of Google beta testers in a limited capacity. There is no definite timescale for its widespread implementation. In his talk on the debut of Google Bard, Google SEO Sundar Pichai stated that Google Bard would soon be used to improve Google Search, thus Bard may become more accessible in the following weeks.
