iOS 17, the next big update for the iPhone, may not be as substantial as Apple had hoped, given the company’s and its engineers’ increased attention on the forthcoming AR/VR headset.
Apple has spent years developing its AR/VR headset and associated operating system, xrOS. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports that Apple’s engineers have been focusing less on other operating systems, including the planned iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 releases, in anticipation of the headset’s arrival in 2023.
According to Gurman’s most recent Power On email, iOS 17, which is internally codenamed Dawn, may have “fewer big improvements than originally expected” because Apple is focused more on xrOS for the forthcoming headset. With macOS 14, codenamed Sunburst, Gurman claims a similar technique is being taken.
iOS 14, which was released in 2020, and iOS 16, which was released in June of last year, were two big updates that brought redesigned widgets to the iPhone Home Screen, App Library, new features in standard apps such as Maps and Safari, and a revamped lock screen, among other improvements. iOS 17, in addition to iPadOS 17, macOS 14, and watchOS 10, will be unveiled at WWDC in June.
