After making stretchy LCD screens, LG Display’s newest product is a super-thin speaker that can be installed in a car without being seen. LG worked with a “global audio company” (LG didn’t say which) to make the Thin Actuator Sound Solution, which can be used in cars instead of traditional speakers.

Most speakers have voice coils, cones, and magnets, but this system uses something called “film-like exciter” technology instead. That can vibrate off of display panels and other things inside the car body to create what the company calls a “rich, 3D immersive sound experience.”

The panels are only 5.9 x 3.5 inches and a tenth of an inch thick. They weigh 1.4 ounces and can be hidden in parts of a car’s interior like the dashboard, headliner, pillar, and headrests. LG says that this frees up space that speakers usually take up, without affecting the sound quality.

The idea isn’t completely new. Sony and LG have already used vibrating panels in their OLED TVs. But if LG Display’s claims about sound quality are true, car interiors are a new use that could be very useful.

We might find out soon since LG plans to show off the technology at CES 2023 (yes, that’s next year). LG said that people will be able to buy the speakers in the first half of 2023.
