Microsoft Schedules Mystery Event for Tuesday as Company Accelerates AI Investments

Microsoft Corporation revealed plans for an event at its headquarters on Tuesday, leaving the issue open to speculation as the business increases its investments on artificial intelligence, including the integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT bot into its Bing search engine.

In an invitation to media, the business did not reveal the nature of the 10 a.m. local time event at its offices in Redmond, Washington, but said it will “discuss some progress on a few intriguing projects.” Microsoft has increased its investments in artificial intelligence, and competition in the field of generative artificial intelligence — the ability to develop new content from digital repositories of text, photographs, and art — is intensifying.

Microsoft has been preparing to add ChatGPT to Bing to provide better, more detailed responses to questions, as opposed to a list of links, in an attempt to gain market share from Google’s extremely dominating search engine, according to a source familiar with the situation. Statista estimates that Bing holds roughly 9 percent of the global search market.

Last month, the software giant also announced a multibillion-dollar investment, estimated to be $10 billion by a source familiar with the matter, in OpenAI over several years. Microsoft provides cloud-computing capacity to OpenAI, while incorporating the AI research lab’s technologies into its own software. The relationship between the two businesses is strengthening. Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of the firm, posted a photo with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Monday, stating that he was in Microsoft’s headquarters and “excited” for Tuesday’s event.

Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., announced on Monday that it has released its ChatGPT competitor, Bard, for testing and that the public will be able to use the service “in the coming weeks.” Bard is built on LaMDA, a big language model developed by Google that sparked controversy in May when a Google software engineer publicly claimed that the artificial intelligence was “sentient” – a claim that has been extensively contested. The chatbot seeks to provide extensive responses to simple questions, such as what to eat for lunch or how to plan a baby shower for a friend. Google also provided a preview of upcoming AI-powered search tools that are intended to provide consumers with insights for searches with no correct answer.
