As the first models from Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola started to appear on the market, foldable phones had a breakthrough year in 2019. Another major development may be on the horizon given that Google, Motorola, and Samsung are reportedly working on new flexible phones.
Perhaps not too far away are Samsung’s upcoming foldable phones. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 are expected to be unveiled at the tech giant’s upcoming Unpacked event on August 10th.
This is presuming Samsung sticks to its previous release schedule, which saw the Galaxy Z Flip 5G announced in the summer of 2020 and the Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 announced in August of the following year.
Although sales of foldable phones are rising, they are still not as common as regular phones. In comparison to 2020, International Data Corporation estimates that shipments of foldable smartphones increased by 264.3 percent in 2021.
However, according to IDC, only 7.1 million foldable phones were shipped worldwide in 2021, compared to 362.4 million shipped globally in the final three months of the previous year.
Here are some allegedly in-development foldable phones from Samsung, Motorola, and other manufacturers.
4 Samsung Galaxy Z Fold
This year is reportedly the upgrade year for Samsung’s phone-tablet hybrid. It appears that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will be a slightly improved version of the Z Fold 3 based on leaks and rumors that have surfaced so far.
According to the prolific leaker Ice Universe, it could have a more streamlined design and a camera that is on par with the Galaxy S22. The source further asserts that the device will be powered by Qualcomm’s just-announced Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4’s price is what I’m really hoping to see a decrease, though. One of the most expensive phones currently available, the current model costs $1,800 without a trade-in.
Samsung’s upcoming foldable, however, may see a price reduction, according to CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants and display analyst Ross Young.
We anticipate learning more soon because Samsung typically announces its new foldable phones in August. For more information on what the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will likely offer, read our full story.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4
The Galaxy Z Flip, a flip phone with a clamshell design from Samsung, is anticipated to get an update this year. The Z Flip 4 is expected to be a refresh of the current model rather than a significant upgrade, according to leaks, which are similar to the rumors about the Z Fold 4.
According to Yogesh Brar, a writer for the website 91mobiles who claims to have received a complete list of the Z Flip 4’s specifications, and Young, a display analyst, the Z Flip 4 is anticipated to have a larger cover screen.
It would be simpler to check the time and notifications at a glance without opening the phone with such an upgrade.
Samsung’s announcement of a new Z Flip model, which is most likely to occur in August, will be necessary before we can be certain. For more information on what the Z Flip 4 may contain, read our full article.
An Updated Samsung Foldable
The prospect that Samsung may soon release a completely new category of foldable phones, however, may be more intriguing. The third type of foldable device from Samsung may be introduced this year, according to Ice Universe in a tweet that appears to have been deleted.
A Samsung slidable phone was originally planned to be produced in 2022, but Young added that the release date had been moved up.
Samsung most certainly has a variety of options to choose from if it decides to introduce a foldable in a novel design. At CES 2022 in January, the Korean technology behemoth displayed a number of novel ideas, including phones with a tri-folding screen and a display that slides.
We’ll have to assume that Samsung’s concepts are merely ideas for the time being since it hasn’t indicated that it intends to introduce a new type of foldable anytime soon.
The Motorola Razr 2022
The venerable Razr appears to be getting ready for a comeback, according to Motorola. In a series of posts on the Chinese social media site Weibo, the manufacturer hinted at a new version of its Razr flip phone with a dual camera, a larger cover display, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, as GSM Arena noticed.
The previous Razr may have a lower price, a new dual camera in a pill shape, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, according to leaks from renowned leakers Steve Hemmerstoffer (via CompareDial) and Evan Blass (published on 91Mobiles).
The 2020 Razr won our favor, in the end, thanks to its improved battery life and refined design. The phone’s $1,400 price tag at the time and other drawbacks, such as the camera’s subpar low-light performance, Patrick Holland, have prevented it from being as good as it could be.
If the third-generation Razr that has been rumored is actually real, Motorola should have addressed these issues.
Pixel Fold by Google (or Pixel Notepad)
The following significant tech giant to adopt foldable phones could be Google. According to 9to5Google, the company is reportedly working on a foldable Pixel that may resemble Oppo’s Find N in both shape and price. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the company’s current flagship device.
The outlet also speculates that the phone may go by the name Pixel NotePad, but warns that the Pixel 6’s camera might be surpassed by it.
The possibility of Google releasing a foldable phone has not been mentioned. A foldable Pixel was also not hinted at Google I/O, the company’s annual developers’ conference where it occasionally demos cutting-edge technology.
But given Google’s recent emphasis on hardware—which the company emphasized at I/O by announcing six new devices—it wouldn’t be unexpected to see the company experiment with foldable.
The unknown is the release date of Google’s hypothetical foldable phone. Google had previously planned to introduce the product in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to the Korean news outlet The Elec, but the company has reportedly delayed the launch.
A Foldable TCL smartphone
TCL abandoned plans to release a foldable phone in the style of a flip phone in 2021, but the company is still persevering. For phones with rollable and foldable screens, the Chinese electronics manufacturer earlier this year unveiled two fresh concepts.
The screens in two different concepts can expand and fold, with one having screens that can bend inward and outward.
When a foldable phone will be made available has not been specified by TCL. But if and when it does, the business intends to keep the cost at $700 or less. Although it will be difficult to reach that price, we can only hope that it will inspire other phone manufacturers to keep their foldable similarly affordable.
A Folding iPhone
One of the few significant smartphone manufacturers, Apple hasn’t yet introduced a foldable phone, and it’s uncertain if it ever will. Thoughts have been fueled by years of persistent rumors about an iPhone with a flexible screen.
Apple might not release a foldable iPhone for several more years if it is indeed developing one. A foldable iPhone won’t be available for another two to three years, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg in his Power On newsletter from 2021.
Apple’s foldable iPhone will not be released until 2025, according to display supply chain analyst Young, who was quoted by 9to5Mac in February.
It might not be a bad idea to delay the release of the company’s first foldable for a few years. IDC predicts that by 2025, foldable phones will make up 1.8% of the market for smartphones as a whole, up from 0.5% in 2021.
A third of the premium Android phone market is predicted to be captured by foldable, according to the market research firm.
