Eiichiro Oda’s manga series One Piece (stylized in all capitals) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by him. Since July 1997, it has been serialized in Shueisha’s shnen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump, and the individual chapters have been collected into 102 tankbon volumes as of April 2022. The plot revolves around Monkey D. Luffy, a young kid whose body was transformed into rubber after mistakenly eating a Devil Fruit. Luffy explores the Grand Line with his pirate crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, in pursuit of the ultimate prize known as the “One Piece” of the late King of the Pirates Gol D Roger in order to become the next King of the Pirates.
The manga became a media brand after it was turned into a festival film by Production I.G and an anime series by Toei Animation, which premiered in Japan in 1999. Toei has also created fourteen animated feature films, one anime series, and thirteen television specials. Several companies have created marketing and media, including a trading card game and a variety of video games.
Viz Media licensed the manga series for English language release in North America and the United Kingdom, while Madman Entertainment licensed it for sale in Australia. The anime series was first licensed for an English-language release in North America by 4Kids Entertainment in 2004, before being dropped and eventually bought by Funimation in 2007.

Summary of The Previous Chapter
Momonosuke is encouraged by Yamato to create big flame clouds, but Yamato thinks it is easier said than done. He then recalls his mother, Kozuki Toki, telling him to flee to the future the day his home was destroyed. He said he didn’t think he could unless she and his sister came with him, but Kin’emon reminds him that in the Land of Wano, a huge failure results in one’s death, so he can’t doubt his mother’s resolve.
Luffy uses a new move named Gomu Gomu no Thunderbolt and hurls the lightning bolt towards Kaidou on the roof and Kaidou comments on how Luffy was able to truly catch lighting. Kaidou, on the other hand, takes a detour and strikes him with Hassaikai, sending him flying away, only for Luffy to snag another lightning bolt and swing around and back at Kaidou with an expanded leg.
He retorts that he is only a child, but Kin’emon counters that he is no longer just Oden’s successor. Kin’emon implored Momonosuke to allow him another chance to fight rather than die a disgraceful death by fire, tears in his eyes. Momonosuke consented to leave his mother with his followers, despite his reservations. In the present, Momonosuke regains his conviction and proclaims that if he gives up now, he will never be able to face his mother, and he resumes his efforts to halt the island.
Concept and development
Eiichiro Oda’s fascination with pirates began when he was a child when he watched the animated series, Vicky, the Viking, which prompted him to create a pirate manga series. Many of the characters in One Piece are based on and named by real-life pirates, thanks to Oda’s reading of pirate biographies. For example, the character Marshall D. Teach is based on and named after the historical pirate Edward “Blackbeard” Teach.
Apart from the history of piracy, Akira Toriyama and his series Dragon Ball, which is one of his favorite manga, have had the greatest influence on Oda. He was also influenced by The Wizard of Oz, noting that he does not enjoy stories in which the reward for a journey is the adventure itself, preferring instead to tell stories in which travel is vital, but the objective is even more significant.
Oda began composing One Piece in 1996 while working as an assistant to Nobuhiro Watsuki. It began as two one-shot stories called Romance Dawn, which became the title of One Piece’s debut chapter and volume. They both contained Luffy’s character, as well as elements that would later emerge in the main series. The first of these short stories appeared in Akamaru Jump in August 1996 and was later reprinted in One Piece Red. The second appeared in the Weekly Shnen Jump 41st issue in 1996 and was reprinted in Oda’s short tale anthology Wanted! in 1998. Takanori Asada, the original editor of One Piece, said in an interview with TBS that the manga was rejected three times by Weekly Shnen Jump before Shueisha consented to publish the series.
