Google, Microsoft and 15 other technology companies headed by Indian-origin executives

While the Indian-born CEOs of Google and Microsoft are widely held up as examples of the success of the Indian technology industry, there are many other executives who lead multinational corporations. There are also a number of men and women of Indian ancestry working at the highest levels of international IT corporations. Here are 17 Indian-origin executives running the world’s largest technology companies.

Silicon Valley’s Alphabet is led by Sundar Pichai, a native of India who assumed the role of Five years after taking the helm at Google, CEO Sundar Pichai was promoted to head parent company Alphabet Inc in 2019. Google appointed Pichai as CEO in August of 2014. Pichai has been with Google for over 20 years and has served as CEO of several of the company’s most important divisions, including Android, Chrome, Maps, and more. Pichai earned a Bachelor of Technology from IIT Kharagpur, a Master of Science from Stanford University, and a Master of Business Administration from Wharton University.

Microsoft CEO and Hyderabad native Satya Nadella In February of 2014, Satya Nadella took over as Microsoft’s CEO. Nadella took over for Steve Ballmer, who was one of Microsoft’s first employees and succeeded Bill Gates as CEO. Nadella earned his undergraduate degree in engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology, a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. In 1992, Nadella began his career at Microsoft as a Windows NT programmer.

CEO and President of Microchip, Steve Sanghi

In March of 2021, Steve Sanghi was appointed executive chair of Microchip, a US-based semiconductor manufacturer. He had been Microchip’s chief executive officer (CEO) since October 1991 and its chairman of the board (Chair) since October 1993. From August 1990 until February 2016, Sanghi was the president. Before joining the company in 1990, Sanghi served as vice president of operations at semiconductor firm Waferscale Integration Inc from 1988. From 1978 to 1988, Sanghi worked at Intel Corporation in a number of management and engineering capacities.

Palo Alto Networks Chairman and CEO Nikesh Arora

In 2018, Nikesh Arora became the CEO of Palo Alto Networks. The previous positions he held at Google and SoftBank were all significant ones. Arora earned his undergraduate degree from Banaras Hindu University’s Institute of Technology, his MBA from Northeastern University, and his MS in science from Boston College.

The Chief Executive Officer of Adobe is a man named Shantanu Narayen.

Shantanu Narayen, CEO of the Indian-founded Infosys, has led the company as its leader for over a decade. He began his career at Adobe in 1998 as the company’s senior vice president of worldwide product research, later rising to the position of chief operating officer in 2005 and chief executive officer in 2007. Narayen worked for Apple and Silicon Graphics prior to joining Adobe. He earned his BS from Osmania University, his MBA from UC Berkeley, and his MS from Bowling Green State University.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna

In April of 2020, Arvind Krishna took over as CEO of IBM. During his more than three decades of service to IBM, he has held a variety of increasingly senior roles. The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur was Krishna’s undergraduate institution, while the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was where he earned his doctorate.

Vimeo’s CEO, Anjali Sud

Vimeo’s CEO is Anjali Sud. Since 2017, Sud has been in charge. Sud has worked for companies like Amazon and Time Warner prior to joining Vimeo. She graduated with an MBA from Harvard Business School.

A Statement from Micron Technology’s President and CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra

Micron Technology is a semiconductor solutions provider, and Sanjay Mehrotra serves as the company’s president and chief executive officer. Earlier, he worked for Sandisk. In addition to his time at Integrated Device Technology and SEEQ Technology, Mehrotra also worked at Intel before helping to found SanDisk. More than 70 patents are in Mehrotra’s name. Berkeley is where he earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Flex CEO Revathi Advaithi

Flex is a multinational electronics contract manufacturer headquartered in Singapore, and Revathi Advaithi serves as its chief executive officer. In 2019, Advaithi was promoted to CEO of Flex. She has held executive roles in the electrical division of Eaton, including president and chief operating officer. Advaith earned her BS from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, and her MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

In 2008, Jayshree Ullal took the helm as CEO of cloud networking firm Arista Networks. She took the helm at Arista and led the company to an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014. Ullal’s employment history includes stops at Cisco and AMD before he joined Arista. Ullal is a former member of the Board of Directors at Zscaler, Arista Networks, and Snowflake. She earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from San Francisco State University and her master’s degree in engineering management from Santa Clara University.

Cadence Design President Anirudh Devgan

Cadence’s president and CEO is Anirudh Devgan. He has been president of Cadence since 2017, and he was previously the company’s executive vice president and general manager of the Digital & Signoff and System Verification groups. He will take over as CEO in 2021. Prior to joining Cadence in 2012, Devgan worked as a corporate vice president and member of the executive staff at Magma Design Automation, and before that, he held management and technical roles at IBM. After earning a BS in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi, Devgan went on to earn an MS and a PhD in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

In his capacity as president of Western Digital, Siva Sivaram

In May of 2016, when Western Digital acquired SanDisk, Siva Sivaram was promoted to executive vice president of memory technology. Sivaram has worked in the semiconductor, 3D memory, process technology, equipment, and materials industries for over 30 years. Since Matrix Semiconductor was acquired by SanDisk, he has worked as an executive for both SanDisk and Matrix. He also established and led Twin Creeks Technologies, a producer of solar photovoltaic cells and related hardware. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the National Institute of Technology in Tiruchi, India.

CEO of VMware, Raghu Raghuram

In May of 2021, Raghu Raghuram took the helm as CEO of virtualization software company VMware. In 2003, when VMware was only 5 years old, he became the company’s director of product management. Raghuram has worked in product management and marketing at AOL, Bang Networks, and Netscape before joining VMware. He has a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business.

CEO and President of NetApp, George Kurian

Data storage and management firm NetApp is led by George Kurian, who also serves as president and CEO. When NetApp needed a new CEO in 2015, they chose Kurian. Kurian’s experience includes stints at Cisco Systems and Akamai Technologies as well as McKinsey & Company before he joined NetApp. Kerala-born After enrolling in the BTech programme at IIT-Madras, Kurian transferred to Princeton University six months later. His education began with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Princeton University and continued with a master’s in business administration from Stanford.

Workday co-founder and co-CEO Aneel Bhusri

Workday was founded in 2005 by Aneel Bhusri and PeopleSoft creator Dave Duffield. Bhusri worked for PeopleSoft before he founded Workday. Aneel earned a BA from Brown University and an MBA from Stanford.
