We hope that time is actually a flat circle and that Russian Doll season 3 arrives soon. The time-traveling dramedy has yet to be renewed by Netflix, and it had best not be one of the numerous Netflix canceled programs.
Nadia, a game developer, relives her 36th birthday party over and over again, having the same talks with the same friends. If Nadia dies, the event continues from where she left off.
Nadia encounters a man named Alan (Charlie Barnett) who is also trapped in a time loop while studying what is happening to her. They band together to discover how they’re linked and whether they can assist one another escape free.
Nadia and Charlie are dispatched on another time-based adventure in season 2, which takes place a few years later. They travel to the past through a gateway hidden in a subway vehicle.
Nadia sees it as an opportunity to correct the wrongs of earlier generations. But she quickly discovers that tampering with time may have far-reaching and universe-altering effects.
The release date for Russian Doll Season 3
It’s hard to determine when Russian Doll season 3 will air on Netflix because it hasn’t been commissioned yet. Season 1 began in February 2019, while season 2 is set to begin in April 2022, thus it might arrive in early 2024.
Season 3 cast of Russian Doll
Nadia, played by Natasha Lyonne, would not be a Russian Doll without her. Alan, played by Charlie Barnett, is also an important character in the tale, serving as both a counterpoint and an ally to Nadia.
Nadia’s pals Maxine (Greta Lee) and Lizzy (Rebecca Henderson) are also expected to return, although whether we see Nora (Chloe Sevigny) or Ruth (Annie Murphy in the past, Elizabeth Ashley in the present) depends on whether we travel back in time, as both characters are now deceased.
Horse (Brendan Sexton III) is also expected to return in future seasons, as he always appears as Nadia’s life begins to spiral out of control.
Other than the fact that he looks to be homeless, we don’t know much about him, but may he be connected to Nadia’s time looping/traveling misadventures? If season 3 is created, it might be able to address that issue.
What would Russian Doll Season 3 be about?
We have no idea, yet again. Perhaps co-creators Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler aren’t sure whether there will be a Season at all.
We can draw some plausible inferences based on patterns from Seasons 1 and 2. Nadia and Alan were both locked in Groundhog Day-style Time Loops in Season 1.
The two of them then took an MTA 6 Train back in time in the style of Back to the Future in Season 2. So Season 3 might feature a brand-new story element at its heart. What would it be, though?
Maybe we’ll see Nadia and Alan go full Terminator and travel to the future to deliver a crucial message from the past (or simply to check what sort of drugs they have there, which would be OK too).
Perhaps they’ll take a leaf from Back to the Future Part III and be transported to the Wild West. Maybe they’ll take a leaf from the popular book and actually go into something that only marginally appeared in Season 1: the Multiverse (between Doctor Strange and Everything Everywhere All At Once, this is having a moment).
To be honest, whatever sci-fi story element finds up at the core of Season 3 of Russian Doll, it’s all about the characters.
Seasons 1 and 2 of the program have given us some interesting twists and turns, but at the end of the day, it’s all about how much we care about Nadia and Alan, and how we see them grow and change through their bizarre, time-bending adventures.
