Scott Peterson moved off San Quentin death row

Peterson is no longer a death row inmate, and his family told KRON4 on Friday that he had been moved to a new facility. Monday was Scott’s 50th birthday, and his supporters took to Facebook to mark the occasion by noting that he had spent the past 19 years and 189 days behind bars for a crime he had not committed.

The California Supreme Court overturned Peterson’s death sentence because the judge who presided over his 2004 murder trial made a mistake.

Peterson, now 50 years old, was resentenced in December 2021 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murders of his pregnant wife, Laci, and their unborn son, Connor, in their Modesto home. Peterson’s re-sentencing hearing included statements from Laci’s relatives calling him a “evil,” “sociopathic,” and “remorseless” killer.

Laci Peterson, eight months’ pregnant and Scott’s wife, vanished on Christmas Eve, 2002. Authorities say Scott told them he went fishing and when he returned to their Modesto, California home, Laci was no longer there. According to CBS News’s reporting, investigators remembered that Scott was less than forthcoming, lacked emotional expression, and asked fewer questions than they would have expected from the innocent spouse of a missing person.

Rewards were offered for information leading to the location of Laci, and vigils and search parties were organised to look for her. At least one vigil photo captured Scott smiling and laughing. According to the Associated Press, in the weeks leading up to Laci’s disappearance, Scott sold Laci’s car, tried to sell their house, and converted the nursery into storage; Scott was already in debt before Laci disappeared.

Amber Frey, a massage therapist, allegedly began having an affair with Scott in November 2002 after he told her he was single. She came forward about the affair in January 2003.

However, the jury members stated that they would carry out the law even though they were against using the death penalty. A judge in San Mateo County, California, ruled in 2021 that Scott would remain in prison without the possibility of release. Sharon Rocha, Laci’s mother, responded in court by saying that her daughter Laci and her unborn grandson Connor will always be dead, and that Scott will always be their murderer. She concluded that things would remain as they are forever.

A state judge has agreed to hear Scott’s case because other judges have decided he should get a new trial because a biassed juror may have swayed his original jury.

Scott Petersen was detained in San Quentin so that he would have ready and easy access to his attorneys throughout the trial, which lasted a matter of weeks.

It was in 1996 that Scott and Laci made their home together. When Laci became pregnant in 2002, she vanished on December 24. In April of 2003, authorities located her body.
