The E3 Conference Has Been Canceled

The E3 Conference Has Been Canceled

The Entertainment Software Association told its members today that this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) has been canceled, IGN can confirm. This comes almost a year after they said it would be back.

Two sources have told IGN that the organization sent an email to its members today with the news that it was ending. The email said that E3 “remains a beloved event and brand,” but that the 2023 event “simply did not get the sustained interest needed to do it in a way that would show the size, strength, and impact of our industry.”

At the end of the email, the ESA says again that it is committed to advocacy work. It doesn’t say that the show will be done again in the future.

After IGN’s report, the ESA released the following statement from ReedPop’s Global VP of Gaming, Kyle Marsden-Kish:

We and our partners put a lot of work into making this event happen, so this was a hard choice to make. However, we had to do what was best for the industry and for E3. We understand and appreciate that interested companies wouldn’t have playable demos ready and that a lack of resources made it hard for them to be at E3 this summer.

Those who have already signed up for E3 2023, we’re sorry we can’t give you the show you deserve and have come to expect from ReedPop’s events.
ReedPop and the ESA will continue to work together on “future E3 events,” according to the press release.

The event was supposed to take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 13 to June 16. It would have been the first in-person E3 since 2019. The event was canceled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A digital version was held in 2021, but the event was canceled again in 2022 to focus on a “revitalized showcase” that would set a new standard for hybrid industry events.

Last June, it was announced that E3 would be back this year and that E3 2022 would not happen. A lot of big names in the industry, including Xbox, Nintendo, PlayStation, and, most recently, Ubisoft, have said that they won’t be at E3 in any way. Instead, most of them will be holding their own digital showcases.
