(Reuters) – WASHINGTON, March 5 Senator Mark Warner announced on Sunday that he and another lawmaker would introduce a bill this week to “ban or prohibit” foreign technology products like the Chinese-owned TikTok.
The bill’s chairman, Senator Mark Warner, has said that TikTok is “one of the potentials” to be investigated. Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders made the remarks on Fox News Sunday.
The bill is timed to coincide with rising pressure on TikTok due to worries that personal information about American users may be shared with the Chinese government.
On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee voted to give Vice President Joe Biden the authority to ban the use of the social media app TikTok within the United States.
Last week, the White House issued a 30-day deadline for all government agencies to remove TikTok from all federally-issued devices and networks. TikTok has been blocked from being installed on state-owned devices in over 30 U.S. states, Canada, and the European Union.
Warner voiced his concern that TikTok “can be a propaganda tool” due to the content of the videos it recommends to its users.

He elaborated on the bill he plans to introduce, saying it “would say, in terms of foreign technology coming into America, we’ve got to have a systematic approach to make sure we can ban or prohibit it when necessary.”
This week, he and Republican Senator John Thune are going to introduce the bill, he said. The Warner spokesperson said the company would announce something on Tuesday.

Insight into the proposed legislation was lacking on Sunday. When asked about the proposal, a spokesman for Thune did not immediately respond.
