Some of the best high-end phones you can get right now are in the Samsung Galaxy S23 series. As we get close to the two-month mark since the three Galaxy S23 phones came out, new things are being learned, especially about how fast the flagship phones can charge wirelessly.
Since getting rid of heat is one of the most important things for phone makers today, it looks like Samsung made some choices that make it take longer to charge the 2023 flagships than their predecessors, the Galaxy S22 series.
Phone Arena did a thorough comparison and found that even though the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S23 have pretty much the same wireless charging speeds, the Galaxy S22 charges faster than the Galaxy S23.
This is strange, given that Samsung’s newest phones are all about speed and performance. To make sure there were no differences, the Samsung EP-P2400 15W wireless charging adapter was used to power up all of the Samsung phones in the comparison.
The table below shows that the Galaxy S23 Ultra takes about 40 minutes longer than the Galaxy S22 Ultra to go from 1% to 100% wirelessly. Under the same conditions, it takes about 15 minutes longer to fully charge the Galaxy S23 Plus, and the Galaxy S23 takes about 16 minutes longer to fully charge than its predecessor.
The 2022 Apple iPhone 14 Pro models are also compared. The 14 Pro Max charges about as fast as the S23 Ultra when a 20W USB-C charger is used with its wireless MagSafe charger.
Samsung probably did this to keep the phone from getting too hot, even though the company’s paperwork says the Galaxy S23 has “an enhanced level of heat dissipation” for this reason.
Still, none of this explains how the flagship phone from the last generation, which has the same size battery and wireless charging tech as the Galaxy S23 Ultra, can charge faster than the newer model when both are charging at the same speed.
It’s also important to note that 15W is not the fastest standard for wireless charging. It’s not as good as some of the other options on the market today. For example, OnePlus has been offering 50W wireless charging for a few years now.
With the Galaxy S23 series, you can only use the company’s own chargers to get 15W fast wireless charging. This means that customers who use third-party charging pads can only charge at 10W, even if the charger can handle 15W.
Even with Samsung’s recommended 15W charger, the detailed comparison shows that wireless charging can only go so fast. We agree with the idea that the company may have made this decision because of how it handles heat.
