To set up your internet and go online quickly with real-time help available when you need it, download the Xfinity app. It is the simplest method of connecting.
Make sure to unplug the existing device in your home if you’re replacing it before completing the following activation steps.
If You Own a Wireless Gateway or Your Own Approved Modem/Router
The Xfinity app makes it easy to activate an authorized modem/router or an xFi Gateway (download via App Store or Google Play). Please be aware that the xFi Fiber Gateway (Arris X5001) cannot be enabled using the Xfinity app and can only be obtained through expert installation.
The Xfinity app cannot be activated in WiFi Ready Apartments with pre-installed xFi Fiber Gateways. To activate, connect to WiFi with the default SSID and password specified on the gateway sticker, then launch a web browser to set up your Xfinity Internet. See Getting Xfinity Internet in Your WiFi-Ready Apartment for further information.
Check the bottom of your gateway to check which model you have.
After logging in to the Xfinity app, if you aren’t immediately asked to activate, you can access the activation entry point by choosing the Account symbol in the top-left corner of the Overview page, and then choosing Activate xFi Gateway or Modem under the Devices section. For further information, read Activating Your Own Modem Using the Xfinity App or Activating an xFi Gateway using the Xfinity App.
When using Xfinity Voice
The instructions below can be used if you’re setting up Xfinity Voice without Xfinity Internet or if your mobile device doesn’t support the Xfinity app.
Both Xfinity equipment and authorized-owned equipment must follow these procedures. We advise you to look up installation instructions in your manufacturer’s installation manual as well.
Set up your modem or gateway
Locate the cable outlet that is closest to the center of your house.
Place your gateway or modem (don’t put it on the floor) in a space that is open and away from exterior walls, metal objects, microwaves, and windows. Avoid crowded areas and anything that can interfere with a device’s signal.
Set up your gateway
Connect the power cord to your gateway’s rear and then to an electrical socket.
The Cable In/RF In port on your gateway or modem should have one end of the coaxial cable screwed in and the other end into the cable wall outlet. A finger-tight attachment should be made.
If you have Xfinity Voice service, use a telephone wire to connect your phone to the Tel 1 connection on your gateway or modem.
Await the readiness of your gateway or modem
It could take up to 10 minutes for your gateway or modem to be ready to start up. Before continuing, confirm that the lights are as they will be in the following instructions. During this process, don’t unplug your gateway or modem.
If your Xfinity Gateway has numerous lights on the front, the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz lights should begin blinking after the Power, US/DS, and Online lights have been solid for at least one minute.
If your Xfinity Gateway has just one top light, it ought to stay completely white for at least a minute.
The manufacturer’s instructions will tell you when your modem is ready to be activated if you have a third-party model.
Make a short-term internet connection
The next step is to connect to the internet, either using WiFi or an Ethernet cable.
If your gateway or modem allows for wireless connections, connect through WiFi.
On the side, back, or bottom of your gateway or modem, look for printed information about the Network Name (SSID) and Password. Name variations include Home-XXXX and XFSETUP-XXXX.
Choose the Network Name from the list of available networks in the WiFi settings on your WiFi-enabled device. When asked, enter the password. Click the Connect Using a Security Key link to input the password in the Security Key field if you are asked to enter a PIN rather than a password.
Using an Ethernet cable, connect
Until it clicks, insert the Ethernet wire into a gateway or modem port that is available. Connect the other end to your computer’s Ethernet port. When an Ethernet connection is made, the Ethernet port will illuminate.
Activate your modem or gateway.
Once you’ve established a temporary internet connection, visit xfinity.com/activate in your web browser if you don’t immediately get a welcome message to start the setup process. Verify your Xfinity account and complete the activation process by following the on-screen instructions.
Notification: Your gateway or modem may restart when the activation is complete, and it could take up to 10 minutes before you can connect to your home network.
Join your personal network.
If your gateway or modem offers a wireless connection, after activation, connect your devices to your WiFi name and password for your home network.
Your previously connected devices ought to reconnect themselves automatically if you changed your Xfinity Gateway and preserved the same activation settings.
Go to your WiFi-enabled devices’ WiFi settings. You can join your devices to your home network as soon as your WiFi name appears in a list of available networks.
Choose the name of your WiFi network at home, then enter the password to log in. Use the new one you established if you modified this during activation.
Note: The Xfinity WiFi home hotspot (xfinitywifi) that comes with Xfinity Gateways may take up to 24 hours to broadcast. Questions regarding the Xfinity WiFi Home Hotspot provide further information on the hotspot.
