AMD’s Ryzen 9 7950X3D has already closed the gaming gap with Intel, and now it’s ready to go one step further. After the Ryzen 7 5800X3D dominated gaming CPUs for a long time, everyone has been waiting for the benchmarks for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

Even though the 7800X3D comes out more than a month after the 7950X3D, I can say with certainty that the wait was worth it.

The new Ryzen 7 7800X3D costs $449 and has eight cores, sixteen threads, and a boost clock speed of up to 5GHz. It’s meant to compete with Intel’s top processor, the Core i9-13900K, which costs around $589, AMD’s top processor, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, which costs $699, and even Intel’s Core i9-13900KS processor, which runs at up to 6GHz out of the box and costs $699.

The 7800X3D from AMD has really wowed me. It costs $449 and has some of the best PC gaming performance you can get right now. It also uses a lot less power than Intel’s equivalents. It’s so great that I think most people should get it as their next CPU for their gaming PC.

I’ve been testing AMD’s 7800X3D with MSI’s Meg X670E Ace motherboard, 32GB of G.Skill DDR5 6000 RAM, and Nvidia’s RTX 4090. This is one of the most recent AM5 motherboards, so it has one PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and three PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots. This gives PC games a lot of storage options.

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D hands-on: A gaming powerhouse CPU with one weakness | Windows Central

We don’t have a 5800X3D in our labs right now, but I’ve tested a variety of workloads, synthetic benchmarks, and games on AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 7950X3D, Intel’s Core i9-13900K, and the 13900KS.

All tests were run on the latest Windows 11 2022 Update, and VBS security was turned off on all systems. Resizable BAR has been turned on, and most of the tests were done at 1080p resolution to help avoid GPU bottlenecks and see how fast the CPU is.

Intel’s Core i9-13900K loses badly to AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D in all seven games I tested at 1080p and max or ultra settings. F1 22 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider run more than 15 percent faster on the 7800X3D, and Watch Dogs: Legion runs 9 percent faster on this latest AMD CPU.

I was surprised to see Nvidia’s RTX 4090 pushing 366fps at 1080p in Shadow of the Tomb Raider with the 7800X3D. This is slightly better than the best performance I saw on the 7950X3D. Even Metro Exodus runs better on the 7800X3D than on either the 13900K or the 7950X3D.
