Apple's MagSafe Is Accepted by the Next-Generation Qi2 Wireless Charging Standard for Universal Compatibility

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) stated today that Apple’s MagSafe magnetic charging feature will be incorporated into the next version of Qi charging technology. Built on Apple’s MagSafe charging technology, Qi2 is a new universal wireless charging standard.

The MagSafe magnetic technology is accessible in MagSafe devices made for the iPhone 12 and later, and because Qi2 incorporates a Magnetic Power Profile, products that adopt Qi2 in the future will also employ this technology.

According to the WPC, Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile will ensure that phones and other mobile devices that run on batteries are correctly aligned with chargers for increased energy efficiency and quicker charging. With Qi2, new accessories will be able to be charged that can’t currently be done with flat surface-to-flat surface technology.

For some devices, faster charging will be possible, and the new standard will “pave the way for considerable future increases in wireless charging speeds.”

Later this year, the Qi2 standard will make its debut, taking the place of the Qi standard currently in use. The launch of Qi2 smartphones and chargers is anticipated to occur during the 2023 holiday season.
