Smartwatches for Android have been stuck on bad chips for years, but with Wear OS 3, things are finally getting better. Now, it looks like Samsung’s future Galaxy Watch 6 will use a new Exynos W980 chipset.

The Exynos W920 was one of the most powerful and efficient chips in a Wear OS watch when the Galaxy Watch 4 came out in 2021.

Since then, there hasn’t been much that can really compare to what Samsung did. Even though teasers for the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear W5 series have been out for almost a year, no Wear OS gear with these new chips has made it to market yet.

Now, it looks like Samsung wants to beat itself by giving the Galaxy Watch 6 a better chip.

SamMobile says that the Exynos W980 processor will power both the Galaxy Watch 6 and the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. Even though we don’t know everything about this new chip yet, we’ve heard that it’s about 10% faster than the W920 and will be made using a 5nm process.

Whether or not this makes a difference, it’s good to see that Samsung is making progress in this area. Almost all Wear OS smartwatches are coming out right now with old chips.

Citizen just set a date for the release of its first Wear OS 3 watch, which still uses the Snapdragon Wear 4100+, this week.

Even though it works well, Google’s Pixel Watch is stuck with Samsung’s Exynos 9110 chip, which was used in the first Galaxy Watch many years ago. If Samsung makes an effort, maybe it will get other brands to do the same.

Along with Samsung’s new foldable, the Galaxy Watch 6 series is due to come out later this year. It will have a better screen, the rotating bezel is coming back, and more. This week, Ice Universe also said that the rotating bezel on the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic will be smaller than on past models.
