Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that Apple is counting on a bigger MacBook Air with a 15-inch screen to help boost sales of laptops, which have been falling. The device, which is expected to come out this year, could have the same M2 chip that was in last year’s MacBook Air models, not the newer M3 chip as was thought before.

Gurman pointed out that the 15-inch MacBook Air may have the same 3024 x 1964 resolution as the 14-inch MacBook Pro, but with a bit less sharpness because it has to fill more room. Apple is reportedly testing this laptop with macOS 14, which it hopes to show off at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. It’s not clear yet when this laptop will come out.

Apple’s sales of laptops have dropped a lot over the past year or so. Last summer, Mac sales dropped by 10%, and sales dropped even more in the first quarter of 2023, when Apple saw a sharp drop of 29%.

A Bigger Mac Book Air May Cure Apple's Falling Laptop Sales

IDC released a report earlier this month that said Apple’s shipments of laptops for the first quarter of 2023 dropped by about 40% due to “weak demand, excess inventory, and a worsening macroeconomic climate.”

Apple is apparently testing a number of other Macs in addition to this bigger MacBook Air to help make up for a drop in sales.

This includes a new 13-inch MacBook Air, 24-inch iMac, and 13-inch MacBook Pro, all of which are likely to come with the M3 chip made with the new and more efficient 3nm process. Gurman says that there are plans to update the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros in 2024.
