When it comes to playoff scoring, Mitchell is the only member of the Jazz team. Mitchell averaged 36.3 points per game against the Denver Nuggets, the most by any player in the playoffs despite the team’s quick elimination after just seven games. Mitchell’s 36.3 point average against the Nuggets is the highest by any Jazz player in a postseason series.

Malone scored 30.7% more than Dantley’s 32.2% during the playoffs in 1989. The guard’s two playoff scoring totals are the highest in Jazz history. In 2020, the guard scored 57 points in a loss to the Nuggets in game one, and 51 points in a series-clinching win in game four.

In the beginning

Mitchell was born to Donovan Sr. and Nicole on September 7, 1996, in Elmsford, New York. His Panamanian mother is a schoolteacher, and his former Minor League Baseball player father is a member of the family. Mitchell grew up in Major League Baseball’s locker rooms thanks to his father’s position as the team’s director of player relations.

He had posters of Mets minor league star Scott Kazmir and future Mets star David Wright on his wall when he was seven years old. For those curious, Jordan is Mitchell’s only sibling. For two New York City-based AAU teams, he suited up: The City and the Riverside Hawks. Mitchell was present at the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich (Connecticut) in 2010 when LeBron James made his decision to sign with the Miami Heat.

Initial All-Star nod for the 2019-20 season

Mitchell scored 32 points and dished out 12 dimes in a 105–95 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on opening night of the 2019–20 NBA season, which took place on October 23, 2019. Mitchell scored 36 points in a 105-94 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on November 3. He scored 37 points against the New Orleans Pelicans on November 23 to set a new season high and help his team to a 128-120 victory.

Mitchell scored 30 points, grabbed seven boards, and dished out nine assists as the Jazz beat the Clippers 120-107 on December 28. Mitchell scored 46 points in a 138-132 overtime loss to the Pelicans on January 16, 2020, tying his career high. On January 30, Mitchell became the first player in his career to be named an NBA All-Star when he was chosen as a reserve for the Western Conference in the upcoming NBA All-Star Game. Mitchell scored 38 points against the Phoenix Suns in a 131-111 loss on February 24 and 37 points against the Boston Celtics in a 114-103 loss on February 26.

Mitchell and teammate Rudy Gobert both tested positive for COVID-19 on March 11, 2020, prompting the NBA to cancel the rest of the 2020 season. Four months later, the NBA Bubble was reestablished, and the Jazz earned the number-six seed and opened the playoffs against the Denver Nuggets.

Mitchell’s 57 points in a 125-135 overtime loss to the Nuggets on August 17, 2020 were the third-most ever in a playoff game. Six days later, in Game 6, he scored 51 points, joining Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson as the only players to ever do so in a playoff series.

Mitchell signed a five-year rookie extension with the Jazz in the shortened 2020 off-season, guaranteeing him at least $163 million and potentially up to $195 million in total compensation.
