French tech site iPhoneSoft says that Apple will stop supporting the first-generation 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros and the fifth-generation iPad in iPadOS 17.
This is the second time we’ve heard claims that Apple’s next operating system will work with iPad devices. Early last month, a reliable source said that the same three models will not be supported by future software updates.
The knowledge that iPhoneSoft has comes from a source inside Apple, so the story goes. If that’s true, it means that the following devices will work with iPadOS 17 when it comes out in the fall.
- iPad Pro (2017 and later)
- iPad Air (third generation and later)
- iPad (sixth generation and later)
- iPad mini (fifth generation and later)
It’s important to remember that just because an iPad is on Apple’s list of compatible devices doesn’t mean it can run all of the apps. For example, iOS 15 works on all devices that can run iOS 14, but older iPhones can’t use all of its features.
We have heard different things about which iPhones will be able to run iOS 17. The same source that first said which iPad models would not be supported by iPadOS 17 also said that the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X will not be supported by iOS 17.
But this was quickly challenged by another leaker who has in the past given correct information. The anonymous tipster wrote on the MacRumors site that all iPhones that work with iOS 16 will also work with iOS 17. This includes all devices with A11 chipsets, like the iPhone X and iPhone 8/8 Plus.
Last year, iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 stopped working with a number of devices, including the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, original iPhone SE, last iPod touch, second-generation iPad Air, and fourth-generation iPad mini.
