Microsoft has announced modifications to the settings of its Xbox system that will enable users to save more energy and minimise the carbon footprint of their games. However, Republican representatives and organisations have interpreted this as the “awake brigade” seeking to “steal your Xbox.”

Microsoft introduced two new Xbox settings on January 11 in an effort to achieve their goal of becoming carbon-negative and “zero trash” by 2030.

The company included a feature that allows the console to select a time of night for maintenance and updates in order to use the most renewable energy from the electrical grid, as well as a “shutdown” setting that can replace the sleep mode and, according to the company, saves 20 times more energy than the sleep mode.

Xbox’s technical programme manager Blaine Hauglie wrote, “We hold ourselves accountable not only for the carbon emissions associated with the production and delivery of our products, but also for the emissions generated by the usage of our devices in the homes of our fans.” Therefore, the manner in which we build our hardware and software to be more energy-efficient and optimised for renewable energy can have a significant effect.

According to his description of the new shutdown option, it “will not impact performance, gaming, or your console’s ability to get overnight updates” and can be altered “at any moment” so that users may pick “what works best for you.” According to Hauglie, every two consoles that switched to the shutdown setting for one year would save as much carbon as a tree planted and cultivated for ten years.

However, Blaze Media, a conservative publication, understood this to mean Microsoft will “forcing gamers to power down to combat climate change.”

It accurately mentioned that the shutdown setting would result in some Xbox systems having a delayed boot time and others being unable to be remotely awakened. According to Microsoft, however, if the user so desires, the setting can be modified.

“First gas stoves, then your coffee, now they’re going for your Xbox,” tweeted Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Monday, referencing a past uproar over comments made by a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission official regarding the health risks of gas stoves. At the time, the chair of the CPSC declared unequivocally that there were no plans to ban gas stoves.

One person wrote, “A default option does not mean they are ‘pushing’ someone to do anything.” “This has been an option for Xbox owners for a time now. I value that they provide it.”

“They intend to seize your firearms. They intend to remove your gas ranges. Now they wish to seize your Xbox “Texas representative Troy Nehls wrote in a similar tone to Ted Cruz. What comes next?

Young America’s Foundation, a conservative youth organisation whose president is former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, tweeted, “Now the woke brigade is going after video games in the name of climate change.”
