Snapchat is introducing a chatbot powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT’s most recent version. According to Snap CEO Evan Spiegel, it is a bet that artificial intelligence chatbots will progressively become a part of more people’s daily lives.

The Snapchat bot will be titled “My AI” and will be pinned to the app’s chat tab above interactions with friends. Spiegel tells The Verge that the intention is to eventually make the bot accessible to all of Snapchat’s 750 million monthly users, despite the fact that it will initially be accessible only to Snapchat Plus subscribers who pay $3.99 per month.

“The key concept is that in addition to speaking with our friends and family every day, we will also speak with AI every day,” he explains. As a messaging service, we are well-positioned to accomplish this. Snapchat is introducing a chatbot powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT’s most recent version. My AI is simply a mobile-optimized version of ChatGPT within Snapchat at launch. The primary distinction is that Snap’s version can answer fewer questions. Snap’s personnel have trained it to follow to the company’s trust and safety criteria and to refrain from providing comments that contain profanity, violence, sexually explicit content, or opinions on controversial subjects such as politics.

It has also been stripped of features that caused ChatGPT to be prohibited in some schools; when I asked it to produce academic essays on a variety of topics, it respectfully rejected. Snap intends to continue refining My AI as more users report incorrect responses. (In my testing, I was unable to conjure any, but I’m sure others will.)

After utilising My AI, it is evident that Snap does not even feel the need to explain the ChatGPT phenomena, which is a tribute to OpenAI creating the fastest-growing consumer software product. In contrast to OpenAI’s ChatGPT interface, I was not given any instructions or guidelines for interacting with Snap’s My AI. It opens to a blank chat page, awaiting the commencement of a conversation.

While ChatGPT has rapidly become a tool for productivity, Snap’s application of generative AI approaches it more like a persona. My AI’s profile page resembles that of any other Snapchat user, although with an alien Bitmoji. The architecture of My AI shows that it is intended to be a companion within Snapchat, and not a search engine.
