Bloomberg reports that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating Tesla CEO Elon Musk for his role in promoting the company’s “self-driving” claims. The SEC’s probe into Musk is just one piece of the puzzle it’s using to figure out if Tesla broke any rules in the way it promoted its FSD and Autopilot product.

The SEC has made no statements regarding this particular case, nor has it commented on any other ongoing investigations. But new information may shed light on why Musk is a target when it comes to Tesla’s autonomous driving features.

A senior engineer on the Tesla team responsible for its Autopilot software testified last week that a video the company released in 2016 purporting to show a Tesla vehicle driving itself was in fact staged. As Bloomberg reported later, Musk personally oversaw and directed the video.

According to Musk’s attorney Alex Spiro, quoted by Reuters, “it is Twitter’s executives that are under federal investigation,” suggesting that the company’s court filing was a “misdirection.”

Twitter did not want to address Spiro’s claims. When Reuters asked if it knew of any investigation into Musk, the company again declined to comment.
