A new Microsoft Teams client with a redesigned infrastructure is rumoured to be released in preview at the end of March. According to The Verge, this new “Teams 2.0” client has been in development for years, and we’ve already seen it in action with the “Teams for Consumers”-powered Chat app for Windows 11.

Microsoft Teams is a notorious resource eater on PCs and Macs, despite efforts over the years to enhance the application’s efficiency. Nevertheless, the preview version of Teams 2.0 that will be released next month has replaced Electron with Microsoft’s Edge-based Webview2 technology and the React JavaScript library.

The application should utilise 50 percent less memory, place less strain on the CPU, and extend the battery life of laptops, according to The Verge. According to rumours, the sample app arriving next month would also have a slider to switch between Teams 2.0 and the current interface, similar to what Microsoft uses in the preview versions of its Outlook desktop apps.

Next month, Microsoft Teams will celebrate its sixth anniversary. As of January 2022, the app had 270 million monthly active users, making it one of the fastest-growing apps inside the Microsoft ecosystem.

Sadly, this rapid expansion also led to the development of an app that perhaps attempts to accomplish too much. In addition to performance difficulties, bloat is likely another reason why many users find Teams to be less than ideal. According to The Verge, the switch to the React Javascript library may result in “additional UI enhancements” in the coming months, so there is cause for optimism.
