TV Spot: Ruth Meets Rap Legend in Ozark Season 4 Episode 2
Ruth Langmore, portrayed by Julia Garner in the Emmy-winning television series “Ozark,” turns to music for inspiration as she sets off on a vengeance mission.
After the devastating events of the Season 4: Part 1 finale, Ruth (Alfonso Herrera) is now on the hunt for Javi Elizonndro (Alfonso Herrera). Ruth runs across various hip-hop legends along the road, including Nas and Killer Mike, who make cameo appearances and chat music with her.
Nas made his feature film debut alongside the late DMX in “Belly” when he was only 16. He was also the narrator and co-executive producer of “The Get Down,” a Netflix musical drama from Stephen Adly Guirgis and Baz Luhrmann.
This means Netflix may have obtained the right to use some of his music for “Ozark,” one of the streaming service’s most popular programs.
How did Ozark manage to sneak a Killer Mike cameo into their film?
As she stands at Killer Mike’s table at a restaurant, Ruth says, “I just want to say, I truly adore your s***.” A little piece of the song “N.Y. State of Mind” by Nas can be heard in her headphones when he asks her what she’s listening to.
Nas’ first album, “Illmatic,” was released in 1994, when he was only 20 years old, as noted by Ruth.
On his album, Killer Mike says, “When I listen to that song, his projects are in Queens and you can sort of seeing Manhattan, and I’ve always thought it was so promising and f****** cruel at the same time.”
“Killer Mike [validates] [Ruth’s] interpretation of the song by drawing similarities to her own life,” according to the official Netflix description of the incident.
Ruth, who has a criminal past, has long lived in the Ozarks with Marty and Wendy Byrde (Jason Bateman and Laura Linney) with their thin veneer of respectability and clean histories as a kind of unreachable Manhattan for her.
