With the release of iOS 16.3, Apple has improved the security of iOS. iOS users can now use physical security keys for two-factor authentication (2FA) of their Apple ID for the first time. This new feature, introduced by the firm last year, provides an additional layer of security for those who face unique security dangers, such as celebrities, journalists, and government personnel.

Physical key support should prevent phishing attacks, which can deceive users into granting an intruder access via two-factor authentication. Using a device like the YubiKey ensures that only individuals with physical access to the key can access your account. While some security keys connect to the iPhone’s Lightning connection, the vast majority use USB. NFC and Bluetooth keys should work with the iPhone, and you can use Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter to connect a USB key.

Additionally, iOS 16.3 features changes to Emergency SOS controls. You’ll still be able to dial 911 by holding down the power and volume-up keys, but the phone won’t dial until you release them. This allows you to cancel before notifying emergency services.

The update also includes bug fixes for issues such as strokes not appearing on shared boards in the Freeform app, horizontal lines appearing after waking on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and a fault that prevented the Home lock screen widget from displaying the Home app’s state. Finally, it includes compatibility for the latest HomePod generation.

If you possess a compatible device, navigate to Settings > General > Software Update to instal the update.
